Why become a Beach Chair Scientist?

The purpose behind this website and blog is to bring a simplified perspective to the questions you might have while relaxing on the beach. It is my goal to bring sound information to you in a format where you are comfortable to translate accurate information to your family and friends.

Today with the advancement of quick access to information - www.beachchairscientist.com is your place for all the answers to those perplexing questions that occur while on relieving tension on vacation.

A teachable moment for the Beach Chair Scientist:

It is Saturday morning, and an avid subscriber to www.beachchairscientist.com just arrived to the Jersey shore after a long drive down from Philadelphia. The Beach Chair Scientist trudged through the hot sand and finally arrived to the set-up his housemates had arranged and settled down in his beach chair to read the daily paper.

He had only relaxed for approximately ten minutes when someone who was starring out at the ocean excitedly screamed, "Look! Oh my God! There is a dolphin!" and pointed to a fin 100 feet out bobbing up and down while swimming parallel to the coast.

The Beach Chair Scientist understands that dolphins are extremely charismatic and personable animals, however, knew that this was not a dolphin.

How did he know that this was a porpoise and not a dolphin?

...The dorsal fin of the porpoise was triangular.

...Dolphins, on the other hand, have a hooked or curved dorsal fin.

This is really the only difference one could see from that distance.

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
